Kenyan Horned adder (Bitis worthingtoni) - Captive care
Bitis worthingtoni occur in well vegetated grassland habitat. The region has a temperate climate through the year with significant temperature drop in the evenings. Rainfall is high and humidity levels are fairly constant between 55-75%.
Daytime temperatures are moderate so one should avoid heat build up in the enclosure for this species, A hotspot of 35° C should be fine without allowing the air in the cage to dry out.
These snakes show little interest in climbing in captivity, however do retreat into grassy tussocks and dry leaf litter when seeking cover so be sure to provide this.
Mating takes place in autumn with babies born in Spring. These are quite small and may require small lizards at first.
