Peringueys Adder (Bitis peringueyi) - Captive care
Bitis peringueyi is a species which can be tricky in captivity if their fundamental husbandry requirements are not met.
These are sand dune specialists and a captive enclosure should accommodate this. Provide a large enclosure with fine sand which is easy to shuffle into and scattered low bushes in which to hide. Be sure to allow enough depth in the sand to allow the snake to fully submerge itself.
Species occuring on the west coast of Southern Africa enjoy lower daytime temperatures than those experienced in the interior. Humidity levels are also significantly higher so captive conditions should cater for both. A basking spot of 32° C should be sufficient, while a daily misting in the morning will help to prevent the development of respiratory issues.
Being primarily lizard feeders rodent prey should be offered sparingly.
Bitis peringueyi give birth to up to 10 babies (120-130mm) in summer which are raised quite easily on small lizards.
