Plain Mountain Adder (Bitis inornata) - Captive care
This species can be maintained under similar conditions as species such as the Red Adder (Bitis rubida) and do very well. A gravel-type substrate with scattered grass tussocks, boulders and thin rock slabs and a basking spot of around 35° would suit this species.
They are eager to climb and have been observed assuming an elevated position at night with their head hanging down in ambush.
Mating occurs in Spring with up to 8 young born in late summer. These babies measure around 140mm and feed readily on pink mice. Patience is required when attempting to get these snakes to strike at prey but once they do they generally go on to finish the meal. Male combat has been observed in captivity with males biting eachother in the process.
